Butterfly Releases at the Pavilion

Located Near the Entrance of the Festival Grounds

One of the most meaningful experiences of the Mariposa Butterfly Festival takes place just inside the entrance — at the Butterfly Pavilion.

Throughout both days of the festival, children are invited to receive a butterfly resting gently on a fresh orange slice. The butterfly feeds on the nectar while little hands observe closely — noticing the wings, the tiny legs, the delicate movements.

It is quiet.

Personal.

Full of wonder.

There is no countdown. No mass release.

Instead, children are given time to explore. When the butterfly has had its fill of nectar, it simply flutters away on its own.

We continue distributing butterflies throughout the day until they are gone.

Why Butterflies Matter Here

“Mariposa” means butterfly in Spanish. The region was named in the 1800s after early explorers observed an abundance of butterflies in this area. That name has endured — and so has the symbol.

Butterflies represent transformation, resilience, and the beauty of change. But they are more than symbols. They are pollinators, migrators, and indicators of ecosystem health.

Many of the butterflies featured at the festival are monarchs — one of the most remarkable migratory species in North America. Monarchs travel thousands of miles across generations between seasons. The butterflies that leave are not the same butterflies that return. Their survival depends on milkweed, native plants, and healthy landscapes.

When children interact with a butterfly at the Pavilion, they are connecting to a much larger story — one that stretches across valleys, mountains, and time.

From Classroom to Festival

The Butterfly Pavilion is part of a year-round educational effort.

The Mariposa Butterfly Festival provides butterfly habitats, larvae, and educational materials to classrooms, daycares, and homeschool families throughout our region. Teachers build science lesson plans around the complete life cycle:

Egg

Caterpillar

Chrysalis

Butterfly

Students measure growth, journal observations, and witness metamorphosis in real time. By the time festival weekend arrives, many children have already raised and released butterflies in their own classrooms.

The Pavilion becomes a continuation of that learning — a shared community celebration of transformation.

Our Educational Partner

The butterflies featured at the Pavilion and in participating classrooms are sourced through Insect Lore, the Original Butterflies-By-Mail Company®. For more than 50 years, Insect Lore has delivered the Magic of Metamorphosis™ to families and classrooms nationwide.

Their insect larvae are ethically harvested and raised in clean, disease-free laboratory environments specifically for educational use. This ensures healthy butterflies that are ready to be observed, studied, and responsibly released.

Our partnership with Insect Lore allows us to extend a trusted, science-based educational experience from the classroom into the festival setting.

Responsibility and Care

Butterflies are handled gently and distributed thoughtfully. Releases take place in suitable conditions, and children are guided through the experience with care.

Our goal is not spectacle.

It is education.

Connection.

Stewardship.

Each butterfly that takes flight carries with it the curiosity of a child and the responsibility of a community.
